Sony Playstation 3: PS3 Capable-of-Reading Your Face Expressions

11 | Oct

Sony had demonstrated the Cell processor at the CEATEC 2005 CONFERENCE. With the growing attention of the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution, Sony hope to steal gamers attention with Playstation 3’s powers.

With its enormous processing power, the next generation PlayStation is more reminiscent of a super computer than a typical games console. The PS3's piece de resistance is its new multi-core 3.2 GHz Cell processor. The Cell was developed jointly by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba and is supported by a 256 megabyte XDR memory.

The Cell enables an astonishing two teraflops of computing power which will help give future games the visual quality you expect from a movie.

At the conference, Sony displayed a simulator that uses the computation of the Cell, to analyze extreme details of a person’s face though the use of EyeToy Cameras. Basically, a 3D mesh is wrapped by images taken by the camera through 500 x-y points in high resolution. The Cell in return display an image on the screen that show an exact copy of what the person look like. Call it, a magic reflection in the game. This technology can be used to improve all EyeToy games with better precision.

With Nintendo making a remote control that can be waived in front of a TV screen, and Sony making a better Virtual Eye, both companies appears to be searching for new innovative ways to make interactive games with alternatives to the traditional controller. The question that remains is, what will Microsoft make for Xbox 360 in the future, that will make the control of games simpler?
